A Magical Kickoff!

Anything is Possible: The Magic of Chris Lopez

It was a huge crowd at this fun evening of magic at the Beale Memorial Library on June 11th! Magician extraordinaire Christopher Lopez visited our Children's Summer Reading Program as part of his 2009 Anything is Possible Tour. It was truly an amazing show, and some lucky audience members even got in on the magic! Chris has done many shows for our libraries over the years, and everyone always has a great time. He has a way of combining dramatic magic with a sly sense of humor that is perennially entertaining.

You can see more photos of the program here.

This was only our first big program of the summer, so visit your nearest library or go to the Kern County Library website to see all the fantastic events we have lined up! Be Creative @ Your Library this Summer! Don't forget to sign up and get a reading log so you can start earning your free book!

Superhero Week SNEAK PREVIEW!

Each week of our Children’s Summer Reading program has a fun theme, and next week we are proud to present all things SUPERHERO! Our storytimes this week includes characters like Ladybug Girl, a fearless young superhero; the giant Bad Baby, who is a colossal pain to her heroic big brother; and Max and Pinky, whose imaginations are truly super.

Here’s a list of some of our reading selections, along with some other books we just think are really cool:

Ladybug Girl by David Soman

Bad Baby by Ross MacDonald

The Adventures of Max and Pinky: Superheroes by Maxwell Eaton III

Supersnouts! by Steve Bjorkman

Superdog: The Heart of a Hero by Caralyn Buehner

Traction Man is Here! By Mini Grey

Superhero ABC by Bob McLeod

Plus, you can have your own mask-making adventure and create your own secret identity at our Thursday event at 7:00 p.m. We provide the materials; you provide the imagination!

The Kern County Library Summer Read...

Create a Great Summer: Read!

The Kern County Library Summer Reading Program is finally here! Be Creative @ Your Library from June 8th to July 25th and enjoy a variety of free programs for kids at your library branches. Go to our website, www.kerncountylibrary.org, for more information on these special events, or come visit us and pick up a schedule. Kids can also sign up to earn a free book for the first ten books they read this summer! Reading records can be picked up at a branch or printed online. Make sure you have a parent sign it, then just return it to the library by Saturday, July 25th, and get a free paperback book provided by the Friends of the Kern County Library, Inc., plus other goodies while supplies last.

Here at the Beale Library, we've got lots of great stuff planned for this summer. Our first week is all about magic, mystery, and illusion, with magician Chris Lopez as our special guest on Thursday, June 11th at 7:00 p.m. All of our big, special Summer Reading events will be on Thursdays at 7:00. We will also have a morning storytime every Monday at 10:30, and a pajama storytime each Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Since this summer's program is all about being creative, we'll also have lots of fun crafts and activities to go along with our storytimes. Materials will be provided by the library, and all events are free of charge and designed for children 12 and under.

Have a great summer and we'll see you at the Beale!
