The Fifth annual Dolores Huerta Foundation Golf Tournament will take place Oct. 9 at the Sycamore Canyon golf course in Arvin.
The mission of the DHF is to inspire and motivate people to organize sustainable communities to attain social justice. The proceeds from this year’s event go toward the DHF Youth Leadership Program.
The Youth Leadership Program has been instrumental in organizing numerous community events that continue Huerta’s legacy of training and educating the leaders of tomorrow. Their accomplishments include organizing a community resource fair, youth forums, food and clothing giveaways, Christmas toy drives, and numerous community clean-ups.
Currently, the group is in the process of establishing a community garden and designing a community mural.
Letting youth take the lead with these projects gives them a sense of ownership in their community and provides them with skills that will benefit them as they pursue an education and a career.
Perhaps the most popular part of the program amongst the kids is the camping trips DHF offers, which allow members of the Youth Leadership Program to learn about environmental stewardship, obtain leadership training and plan for future community projects.
Past tournaments have included celebrities such as Eva Longoria, George Lopez and Lupe Ontiveros. This year’s tournament features a hole-in-one car giveaway sponsored by Family Motors and a number of other contests and prizes.
“The golf tournament is a great way to help the youth in our community and have fun at the same time,” said Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, president of the Huerta foundation and the namesake of the tournament.
Persons interested in registering for the tournament can go to: www.doloreshuerta.org/golf.
Or, call Brock Seraphin at the DHF office at 322-3033 for information. Tax deductible sponsorship opportunities are also available.
