There is currently a lot of debate surrounding the topic of the Internet. Is the Internet mostly good or bad? Many people feel that the Internet is having a negative impact on society. Others say the internet is indispensible for research. Since there are ways of protecting one’s computer and blocking spam, the Internet does not have to be an unsafe place for surfing the web for good reasons. There are a lot of advantages for using the Internet and several reasons why people should use it.

All students at different levels of schooling are the top research users. In fact, nowadays, it is almost required that students use the Internet for school research because of its limitless information. It has actually helped raise grades because students such as this writer can get accurate information quickly for school projects from articles and documentaries. It also helps students save time by not going to an actual library and looking at many books for one simple answer. Another advantage is that students can get advice on how to do specific school homework and projects, instead of waiting for a tutor appointment. It is pretty much like having a tutor or an entire library at home.

Another way the Internet is being used is through online business. For example, e-commerce and e-banking are very convenient for people who transfer money or simply check their accounts. The transfer of money has become easier, faster and safer nowadays. Online shopping is also very convenient for most people because they do not have to leave home. Shopping online has made life so much easier for most people because they can pretty much buy anything such as clothes, furniture and food. One of the most important advantages of the Internet is that it can bring families instant communication. The Internet has connected billions of friends and family members. People who are out of town or even in a different country are now closer than ever. E-mails are amazing because people can instantly receive a love letter or a simple “hello” in a matter of seconds. People do not have to wait days or weeks to receive a letter through the traditional mail anymore.

The Internet has essentially made the world a global village. Whether the Internet is good or bad or whether it should be used or not, can be determined by the user. However, the advantages of the Internet have limitless uses for most people. That is why surfing the Internet has made life easier than ever for people who use the web for purchases, school research papers and instant communication with family members. Since there are ways of protecting your computer and blocking spam, people are safe surfing the web at all times. With that said, I suggest that people us the Internet because it is very convenient and safe.

if not it is never too late, because you can always help and support an abused and needy children anytime by becoming a volunteer.

All of you can make a huge difference just by donating your time.

I have been always interested in helping others and specially children.

It is always a pleasure to hear that someone is interested in helping others. I will like to encourage you to help children because they really need us.

Statistics: According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services there are currently 2,700 Kern County children out of home placement. This includes group homes, Foster Family Agencies and Foster Care.

B. Importance of the problem:

c. Reports: more than 200,000 children living in Kern County, 19% of them were abused and neglected in 2005 and 2006. Fortunately, in 2007 and in this present year the percentage is decreasing.

d. Who is affected by the problem?

Children have been abused and neglected because of Poverty or unemployment, Low self-esteem, Alcohol or drug abuse. The most common abused and neglected children are from birth to 3 years old.

e. Give examples, stories, and illustrations about this problem:

Kern county abused children had the highest percentage in California.

f. Consequences of inaction: If child abuse is not reported these children are more likely to have disabilities such as: mental retardation, behavioral problems, emotional disturbances, visual impairment, learning and physical disabilities.

b. Present a plan of action:

You have the power to create positive change in your community by stopping the abuse and neglect that occurs in your own neighborhood. If you suspect child abuse or neglect is occurring, please report it to the police. The longer the abuse continues the more damage it will ultimately cause the child.

1. How can begin this solution:

The way I donate my time to help raise money for these children is by hula dancing. The name of my troop is The Jamm’n Island Girls. Today our troop dances at least two events a month to support families by ensuring parents have the knowledge, skills and resources they need for an effective way to protect children from risk of child abuse and neglect.

We have danced to bring awareness for these children and families throughout Kern County. We have participated in the Buddy Walk for Downs Syndrome Children, H.E.A.R.T.S Connection for medical fragile children, The Department of Human Services, East Bakersfield Collaborative, and Boys and Girls Club. Anyone can help and we can work together to make sure our needy children receive the same opportunities as others. You can help by joining an organization such us the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Elk, or faith-based organizations that have food and clothing drives, toys, and school supplies. All these items are needed and are very appreciated

Conclusion:

Together we can help improve our communities and outcomes for our most precious gifts our children.

Lost in translation

Have you ever being lost in translation?

If you have, you will probably know how I felt.

Being in a different country where you don’t speak the language can be very difficult to communicate with others.

I’m going to explain to all of you why I was lost in translation for many months.

I was born and raised in Mexico in a small town in Sonora where everybody knows each other. My grades in high school were ok except for my English class. My grades were below 45% every semester and I needed to do something about it quick. When I turn 17 years old, finishing my first year of high school, I made an important decision that changed my entire life. I decided to move to US to learn English and finish my high school. On the other hand my English instructor in Mexico advice me not to move to US yet, because I had already completed 1 year of high school, and moving to a different country was going to be tough. He said that it was best for me to graduate from high school and then move to US. He wanted me to be prepared for tough classes and learn English quick.

Transition…Here are some of the difficulties that I went through in high school.

A- Basic English:

My first year at Highland High School was very difficult, I was lost in translation in every single class because I didn‘t know the basic English. I had to translate my homework and all my assignments in order to understand, and of course I spend more time doing homework or studying than any other student. It took me a few months to learn the basic English and I was able to handle a conversation with friend and instructors.

B- Meaning of words:

I was also paying close attention to conversations that deal with words that had the same sound, so I wouldn’t get confused with the meaning. For example: Rich means a wealthy person or food that has a strong flavor. At that time anybody who said “this is to rich” I thought it was expensive and I always answer “ No is not“. There were many other words that confused me but once I learned more English, the words became easy to relate. My English instructor was not kidding about saying that it was going to be tough, but I did graduate from Highland High school and I have a A.A as a Graphic Artist from Bakersfield College.

Transition…Ironically me and my husband Michael are lost in translation with our son.

A-My son Andrew:

My gorgeous son Andrew is 2 years old. he is trying to talk and he sounds so cute.

B- Words are not clear yet:

Some words are easy to understand but other isn’t. For example, he started saying mik which is milk, the other word that I think is very funny is when I say to him, No Andrew that is not good, he will look at me and say bae boe which means “bad boy”.

C- Spanglish:

Since our son is learning both languages, my husband is going through a hard time understanding Andrew, he is lost in translation like I was, because Andrew will say a few words in English but the rest in Spanish, which we call Spanglish. It is funny watching my husband trying to understand my son. Andrew will say to dad “Ven” which means come here or “Brinca, Brinca” which is bouncy, bouncy. My husband is know learning Spanish with our son and he actually has a pretty good accent.

Summary: Even though it was very difficult to learn English I enjoyed high school. Being lost in translation with our son is fun and the cutest experience I ever had.

Clincher: I just wanted to leave with this advice…

Don’t listen to any body telling you what you are able to do.

There is no obstacle that can stop you from reaching your goals

Believe in your self and go for it.
