Dear Ms. Tinoco I am so sorry that your familia fell upon hard times in the past as many families are struggling now with the economy being as it is. I just would like to ease your mind a little on a comment that you made in your article about La Bonita Tortillas.

La Bonita has been Bakersfield’s local Tortillera for the past 50 years when a pack of flour tortillas started at a mere $.35 and even less for a pack of corn. As with any business, there are yearly increases in the costs of making a product from any raw materials, and as a consumer, I have noticed that the price of flour alone has gone up a whopping 40-60 percent, which I am positive has an impact on the production of flour tortillas. La Bonita actually only makes a profit of 25 percent per package of tortillas, but remember each grocery store has their own mark up on products, which is how they make their money, but being a thrifty shopper myself I have found that I can find a pack of La Bonita Tortillas for as low as $.99! The people you should think are "locos" are the grocery stores that
raise the prices to whatever fits their demographics. Can you imagine how many packs of tortillas the La Bonita Family has to sell in order to feed their own children if they are only making a roughly $.25 per package?! La Bonita has also been known to be strong supporters and donators of the community including many churches, schools, sports programs and much more. I am positive that if your family is in need of tortillas La
Bonita could surly spare a couple dozen to help out.

I always have a sense of feeling lost in translation when approaching the Spanish language. There's always this jealousy in me because my father refused to teach me while I was little. But really, I could get off my tail and learn more of the language. It would enrich my storytelling as a writer and as a journalist. This piece is an inspiration!

My son Jordan performing mariachi at Curran Junior High was one of the highlights of his music career. Now that he is in college, he is using his gift to minister to people in church music at a couple of locations. I can only think that the ministering side of performing the violin didn't come from orchestra, but from the sense of camaraderie found in mariachi music. I love this piece. Great writing!

I am a product of a social system. A mere number, an insignificant entity. I have a name. Whether that name is Garcia, Gonzales, Ramirez, Rojas, or Lucero. I am a person. I am a person with the features of ancient civilization. The Maya, the Toltec, the Aztec, the Mixtec. I am a "MEXICANO", but to hell with the number, to hell with the degrading names tagged on me by a Racist Society. Names like wetback, spic, greaser, taco vendor, or Mexican american with a derogatory inflection. I am a "CHICANO". I am a CHICANO because it gives me identity & pride. It gives me pride because I gave myself that name & it gives me identity becauce it did not result from WASP origin. It comes from my people, the "MEXICANOS". "CHICANO" might sound bad to your canditioned ears. This is what the system has accomplished to do to some of you, but be proud. BE PROUD THAT IT IS A PRODUCT OF A FAST GROWING REVOLUTION OF IDEAS & A SINCERE CONVICTION THAT THE CHICANO MUST BETTER HIMSELF IN A SOCIETY THAT HAS SYRSTEMATICALLY MEGLECTED HIM

So many people are unaware of how the Filipinos and the Mexicans worked together. I was especially pleased to see the mention of Philip VeraCruz. Some of my favorite childhood memories include sitting on my grandparents couch and just listening to that amazing man talk.

My favorite kind of Lowriders are the Old Skool bombs pre 55' cars. especially the 1948 Chevy Aerosedan w/ two tone Brown and tan paint job. My brother and I owned a trio of 79' Lincoln Mark 5s that were all dressed and decked out. People used to call us "The Lincoln Bros". We were always cruising on State St. in S.B. those were the days. It is a great feeling when people appreciate you and your car as an accomplishment for our dedication.

This Saturday, I checked the mail in my box and saw the Mas Magazine along with the many fan mail that required my autograph for the upcoming BILLATHON AUGUST 2008. You know, you all get those too. :p

This story is very touching and for a 33 year old fella to be a little teary eye about the story, I must say that the story approached me that God has a plan for all. No matter what obstacle we go into, we'll be alright. The part that got me is when she received a scholarship. Thanks for this MAS. I love the story. Keep it up....

My favorite kind of lowrider is a 1965 Chevy Impala SS (Convertible). I'd like it to have an original look, so no hydro's needed. The prefered color is Candy Apple Red with a few pinstipes. A set of Dayton Wire Wheels would finish this off. In order to give it the true lowrider look, I would cut the coils to make it ride "low".

Alright all you Chevy lovers. I'm here to tell you that my favorite Oldie but Goodie Low Rider I've had was a 1957 V-8 two-tone Ford Fairlaine my brother and I used to drive while at Delano High School.

There was nothing fancy about it but we called it the Batmobile because there was a Batman episode back then when the Batmobile shot out a plume of black smoke as it zipped along Gotham City. Well, our Ford Fairlaine had bad engine rings and it would also shoot out a large plume of smoke, but in this case, it was White Smoke. Whenever we accellerated in "Delano City", the Fairlaine would leave a plume of white smoke a block long, similar to driving on an old country dirt road.

When we came to a stop sign and would play with the brakes as it came to a stop, it would bounce up and down as if it had hydraulic lifts underneath the front end. Of course, there were none and what contributed to the bouncing were the very bad shocks and springs on it.

This 57 hopper was a rolling bomb and we cruised with the radio blaring our favorite music, "Oldies but Goodies". The tuck and roll and large steering wheel made it clean to cruise in although the girls would die from embarrassement, we thought it was cool. The coolest thing about it was that the Delano crime fighters never caught us.

There's nothing even compares to the classics! Like a shining black '59 Impala, low and slow, with lights pulsing to some slow song like 'SO' by War. Inside the tuck-n-roll black leather seats are soft against your shoulders and back. Cruising with your best guy / girl sitting side-by-side ( before the seatbelt law) and your best friends in the back seat going down California Blvd.! The Street Lights are reflexed on every spoke on the rims as they move slowly by. That's how we did it, back in the days..

My favorite lowrider was my husbands metallic emerald green '63 Chevy Impala when we had our 1st born with white tuck n roll upholstery,8 track stereo that was the bomb with all the oldie music from way back when, chrome rims down to the ground cruising Whittier Blvd when I went into labor. We rode in that lowrider low & slow with much pride and the baby enjoy it too. Needless to say now the next generation (my boy) is now doing his thing with oldie cars along with all the newer equipment they didn't have back in the early '70.

Is this REALLY his last year for performances??? Say it isn't so!

I have seen Chente perform live at the KC Fairgrounds a couple of years back, then again in Fresno, with his son Alejandro at his side.

In both instances, I was way in the front and they were by far the most memorable concert performances that I have been to.....

I cried too. each time!

There's something about Chente that stirs the emotions....

I missed his latest concert.... I do hope he will continue to perform.... Who can replace such a great man?!!

My best "Sesame Street" memory was watching the shows every weekday with my little brother & my mom's daycare kids. We would sing along with all the songs, especially "The People In Your Neighborhood," the pinball counting song (which I now sing to my son), "C is for Cookie," and of cousre "Rubber Duckie You're the One." I love watching the new shows with my son, but I also miss many of the old characters, such as Amazing Mumford, Guy Smiley, Forgetful Jones, Teeny Little Super Guy, Sherlock Hemlock, the Twiddlebugs and the News Flash with Kermit the Frog. I love that 25 years later I can still visit my childhood on Sesame Street while making new memories with my 4 year old son. It's a fantastic children's show that should be apart of every child's memory.

ok, i have to tell you my age to tell you how long ive watched sesame street, but its been about 30 plus years! I had dreams when I was a little girl that one day that I would go to Sesame Street becaus I actually thought it was a real place. My favorite was Count Dracula.... one hahaha two hahaha three hahaha and then there was the cookie monster who I can relate to even now. I mean, don't we all have that grouchy attitude? a little clutter in the home? and boy who can resist cookies? I now watch sesame street with my grandaughter Trini and I would love to take her to Sesame Street, Hey, I know it's not real, but in my heart I can dream can' I? Great Memories. BIG BIRD rocks!

Sesame Street had to be the best educational programming. My twin sister and I would watch Sesame Street faithfully and learned so much from it. Maybe that is the probably with our kids now, everything is a fad and they are not being taught anything. Video games and Hannah Montanna can only entertain and not teach. Oscar, Big Bird, Ernie and Bert, Elmo and the rest of the cast; were an important part of our day and they definitely made learning fun. It is still being broadcasted on PBS, just with all the other big networks like Nickeldeon and Disney, kids tend to view the programming they offer. Sesame Street is programming that is intended for pre-schoolers and covers all ethnic backgrounds. Definitely miss viewing the show and hope to take my six year old to see Sesame Street Live. She enjoys it, just like I did when I was a kid!

I celebrated 5 de Mayo by informing my students what in reality is 5 de Mayo. 5 de Mayo is simply a battle that took place in Puebla when the French tried to invade Mexico. Not Mexico's Independence has many believe. 5 de Mayo is celebrated across the United States but not in Mexico! It's more of a Chicano culture/tradition to celebrate this date as it was Mexico's Independence. --Dion

First of all, I would like to thank you for delivering MAS to my school; my kids love it! MAS is an enriching source to empower ourselves with our culture and our community. I have been reading MAS magazine since it came out and I just love it! I like the fact that people can educate themselves with MAS about our culture in general and in some cases even accepted.
One suggestion would be to have more stories about the different Spanish speaking countries and pictures. Or even have a small section were people can learn the correct Spanish instead of using words that we Chicanos made up. For instance, parquiar instead of estacionar for parking or aseguransa instead of seguro for insurance. Well now I am hoping to get an opportunity to wi and relax after a stressful week haha :-)~ by the way I will be happy to help out for those sections.

MAS Magazine has been a must-read since it first began! What I enjoy most is the family/smalltown feel it has for the Hispanic culture in Kern County. It brings all the generations and really helps to appreciate the family we have in our own homes. Keep up the Good Work.
SUGGESTIONS: More coverage on the rural town festivals, ie. Wasco Rose Festival, Delano Harvest Festival.

MAS MAGAZINE is attractive period... At least in my eyes. It has most every latino, latina, and even other cultures attention. MAS has been there for me on some tuff times especially on the passing of my MOTHER, and also on some good times when my first and only grandson was born. So I want to say THANKS. for not ignoring my articles. Keep up the GOOD WORK MAS....
How about us NATIVE AMERICANS? I bet there's alot of NATIVE AMERICANS here in Kern County that has some stories to tell. Love to hear and learn more about us NATIVE AMERICANS...

WOW, what's not to love about MAS?? Informative stories about life on the Latin side of Bakersfield, interesting personal profiles about local Bakersfieldian's (well, all of Kern County), and Denise Ornelas, by far the hottest Latina in Kern County (sorry Olivia, you're married, and your hubby's an expert rifleman, lol). OK, the last part was for fun. As for story ideas, hmmmm, we need more coverage of cooking contests, or more contests for that matter. Late, see you all at the Fest. And yes, I'll have new lithium's for the camera, so beware...

I love the fact that MAS keeps me updated on all the happenings in and around Kern County. I like reading the articles about real people and real things that impact thier lives. I feel the hispanic culture has a huge impact here in Bakersfield and MAS keeps us updated.

I love the fact that I can read about things going on in my community either on line or sitting in the comfort of my home! I think you need to do some publicity for the Greek Life at CSUB, so many people have such a negative outlook on Greek Life and that is not always the case, and with CSUB being such a smaller CS campus Greek Life is a HUGE part of the campus!

This blog is for Sesame Street Live Contest. I was always told as a young child to always put family first and to never turn your back on them no matter how wrong, nasty, or negative they might appear to be. You should always love and be there for your family no matter what, because family will do more for you than anyone else would. This stayed with me into adulthood, which help strengthen the relationship between my daughter and me. It does not matter how wrong or shameful the sitaution she might have encounter or engaged in, I will always support her and love her no matter what.

i always tell my daughter that when she lies I get mad at the lie and all that she did to hide her secret. I explained that if she just comes to me and says mom, i messed up, i did (insert mistake here), how can i be mad? I can't. My whole life I told one lie after another becuase that was suvivor mode in our house back in the day. I know that fear, that ugly feeling in your belly that makes you just wanna vomit. I have learned as an adult that if I just come out with it, I might get a "WHAT?!?!" but that's about it. I have never been able to come clean about all my secrets. In 1992 I got married at the court house to one of my best friends who was in the navy. We got married cause he was being charged with a sex crime for being gay. So we got married to prove that he wasn't gay. (didn't work) No one in my family to this day knows about that. we divorced in 2000. my mom would freak if she knew. I do regret that one. even if it was to help a friend, marriage is not something to take lightly, even if it is to help someone.

Hopefully I've prepared my daughter well enough that she won't feel like she needs to keep anything from me. Since she was a baby I've always told her, "I may be mad, I may yell, I may be angry, but I still will love you." So whenever I'd get mad at her and totally blow up she'd cry, but moments later she'd come up to me and say, "I know you still love me mom" and that always made me feel better about reacting like a mean mom. I've always told her that lies hurt people, and the longer your keep it in the more it will hurt people, that you should just come out with it and accept the consequence. She's pretty good about telling me things right away then bracing herself for my 5 minute steamfest, then I always thank her for telling me and that that was the right thing to do because telling me right off leads to less punishment than lieing or hiding something.

I always was afraid to tell my mom stuff, for good reason that I won't go into. I remember when I found out I was pregnant a few months after I graduated high schoool. Instead of telling her outright I had a keychain made with her name engraved on one side and the other side engraved with "World's Prettiest Granma" - then I wrapped it and left it on her nightstand before I moved out for the umpteenth time. She called me later that night and simply said, "I knew you were, I had a dream ... " yeah, can't keep much from a psychic/intuitive mom. Ha!

I just read the part about Lourdes and I almost cried, ok I did! My Dad told me the same things her mother told her. When it came down the choice I had to make, I went with my Dad's advice. I wasn't happy. I ended up nowhere. I tell my kids to talk to me no matter what! And, if I get upset, I try to be an adult about. We all have to suck it up!! :)

Chicano, Latino, Hispanic - which is better term?

I think is funny that some people actually get offended sometimes for not being called in the right term. I am Salvadorean by birth. I am an adopted daughter of America and people can call me whatever they want. Hispanic, Latina, Salvadorean. Because my ex-husband is Mexican, born in Chihuaha, and my social circle includes more Mexicans than people of other cultures, I speak spanish with a mix of Salvadorean and Mexican accent. So...when people sometimes ask me what part of Mexico I'm from...I calmly explain that I was born in El Salvador. I love it because it gives me a chance to share my cultural background with others...after all "A Rose, by any other name, is still a Rose"
