Que pasa homies. Welcome back to In the Mixx. Well, after taking my little Kenzie to all her gymnastic competitions, what seems like every weekend, driving out of town to cities I haven’t even been to, I have to say someday I hope she makes it to the Olympics. Que suave if she does.

That’s one reason I haven’t been writing and keeping you informed on what’s happening in this city — by the time I get home, well, you know all I’m thinking about is that beautiful bed of mine, lol ... but this time we got back early. So let’s get In the Mixx and see what’s going on this weekend...

Salsa with Son Tropical
Tonight, Friday, Oct. 17, if you like that cool, salsa Latin jazz musica, then head on over to Camino Real Restaurant, 3500 Truxtun Ave. Have a cold cerveza and dance to the salsa sounds of Son Tropical from 7 to 10 p.m. 21 over with ID and no cover charge, just good music and cold drinks. So if you skateboard, you’re gonna want to be here. Lots of Free Food, live music, some cool Pro-Demo and lots of giveaways.

Daisy & more on the horizon
Time for Noe G’s head’s up. Local recording artist, Daisy, is performing live Nov. 2, for a Dinner/Concert at The Jaguar Hall, 516 California Ave., along with Mariachi Monumental de America, famous Mexican trio, Los Dandys, and from Bakersfield, Mariachi Real de Jalisco. A conversation with Yahir at the Kern County Fair

The night was young as Yahir Othón Parra made his way to center stage on Sunday, Sept. 28 at the Kern County Fair’s Budweiser Pavilion.

The 29-year-old Mexican singer and actor, known to his fans simply as “Yahir,” is set to release his fifth album, “Marcame la Piel,” in December. A throng of local fans came out to see him in person at the fair.

Yahir made his opening debut on the hit reality television show, “La Academia, Ultima Generacion de Mexico,” in 2002. The show broadcasts at 7 p.m., Sundays on Azteca America Bakersfield, Channel 42.

Shortly after, Yahir released his first self-titled album before moving on to the telenovela world. He is currently starring in “Bellezas Indomables” as the protagonist of the show.

Yahir is also the father of a 10-year-old son, Tristan.

Before Yahir began his autograph signing for his fans at the fair, he took a moment to speak with MÁS:

Q: What is your passion in life? What motivates you?
A: Cars are my passion. I like my car and any machines. Everything that uses gas, like motorcycles. But, the most is music. My son, my family, my brothers and sisters, motivate me. To sing to the love is really important to me.

Q: How old were you when you first performed? And where?
A: I was 12 years old when I first performed in my home town of Hermosillo, Sonora Mexico. I had a big hole in my stomach and I didn’t know if I should stay or get down (off stage) because I was really nervous.

Q: What was it like as a contestant on La Academia?
A: I lived in Tijuana for 10 years. I played in bars looking for an opportunity. Then one day ... my friends called me to go to a casting. I didn’t want to. But, then I went. After a month, they (Azteca) called me.

Q: What are your plans for the future? What are you doing at this point in your life?
A: I am going to have a new CD at the end of the year. It is called “Marcame la Piel” with really great composers and writers. My producer, whose name is Aureo Baqueira, is from Los Angeles and is a really good producer. I am working. I have to learn to mature. The music is something big and universal. You have to be listening and learning all the time from companeros.

Q: What would you like to say to MÁS readers?
A: I would like to give a big hug for all my people. I am trying to reach all the people in the United States. I have been working for five years here. Thank you and I hope to see everyone for the next concert. I love Bakersfield. It’s my third time being in Bakersfield in two years. My goal is to come back again and again. I want it to be consistent.

Living La Vida ‘L’ at the Alma Awards

Some of the most celebrated Latino stars in television, film and music were honored at the Annual 2008 NCLR (National Council of La Raza) Alma Awards. The awards ceremony was showcased at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and was broadcast locally Sept. 12.

I was honored to have had the opportunity to sit amongst many talented artists and studio execs, compliments of KERO 23 along with my guest, Angie Pines.

Our charismatic host Eva Longoria Parker was a whirlwind of beauty as she changed more than six times between scenes — from beautiful flowing, softly colored, pink gowns to sexy, jewel-toned gowns. She admitted that it took her more than three hours to get her hair and makeup perfect!

Winning his first Alma Award for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Television Series” star Jorge Garcia of ABC’s “Lost” was overwhelmed with appreciation as he gave his speech. I met him in person and he seemed to be very humble and down-to-earth.

Well-known host Ryan Seacrest came out and awarded America Ferrera of ABC’s “Ugly Betty” the “Entertainer of The Year” award. America’s speech was both genuine and heartfelt, as she shared her recollection on how, as a young girl, she was inspired to grow and nurture her acting ability by watching other stars honored on past Alma Award presentations.

There were musical performances by many artists such as: Brian McKnight with Jon Secada, Lisa Lisa with Mario, The Cheetah Girls, Will.I.Am with Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, Brazil ‘66 and Sergio Mendes.

Cheryl Burke and Kym Johnson of ABC’s “Dancing with The Stars” put on a saucy, hot dance routine while AB Quintanilla and the Kumbia All-Starz performed.

Backstage Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong put on a very funny Saturday Night-esk skit.

High School Musical stars Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale presented the “Outstanding Director of a Made For TV Movie” award to Kenny Ortega for “High School Musical 2” on the Disney Channel.

Jessica Alba was a vision of beauty as she awarded Narciso Rodriguez the “Special Achievement in Fashion” award followed by a colorful, high-tech musical light show of his fashions modeled on the cat walk.

One of the biggest highlights of the show was when Linda Ronstadt was awarded the “Trailblazer” award by opera great, Plácido Domingo. A video clip montage showed her rise to stardom. It was a special treat when country star Winona Judd and mariachi singer/actress Lucero sang a special tribute to her. Lucero belted out a grand version of “Los Laureles,” while Winona sang the Ronstadt standard, “Blue Bayou.”

It was no surprise when Shakira won the “Humanitarian” award. She has worked tirelessly to help youngsters escape violence with her charitable foundation “Barefoot,” which she started in her native Columbia.

Shakira also had the opportunity to award a young girl whom she’d worked with, “The Youth Advocacy” award,” bringing the surprised girl onto the stage to receive her award.

The after party was huge with stars mingling all around us. We met John Quinones from ABC’s “Primetime” as well as Bakersfield’s own Latina pioneer, Dolores Huerta. We also ran into the Margarita King, entrepreneur Giovanni of the famed Margarita King drink.

The NCLR is dedicated to the advancement of the American Latino and is one of the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy groups in the U.S. According to the NCLR, “The Alma Awards were created in 1995 as part of its strategy to promote fair, accurate and balanced portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment industry.”

Noe G.'s in the Mixx

OK. October is right around the corner — that means Christmas is near. Shop early, lol, ‘cause you know how it gets in the malls around that time — everybody turns into a chiflado, lol, everyone wants to be first at the cashier. Last week at the fair, The Bangles killed! it and Tower Of Power — well, you know how they did; the same as last year, the year before that, and the year before that year, ha-ha. Now, for your weekend haps. Let’s see where the coolest spots are to hit this weekend:

Not your average band
Friday, Sept. 26, catch The Average White Band at the Kern County Fairground’s Budweiser Pavilion.Check them out as they energize the crowd with their instrumental mega-hit songs “Pick Up the Pieces,” “Cut The Cake” and more. This concert is free with paid admission to the fair. So pick up a cold cerveza and head out. Showtime is 8 p.m.; tickets are $8 for adults, and children (6-12) $3 with a $5 parking fee. Ayeee that hurts.

Make it a Mothership night!
Alright, this Saturday, Sept. 27 is the last Saturday of the month — what does that mean? Well, it means only the coolest night at Sandrini’s, 1918 Eye St., as The Mothership rolls through. But we’ll also be celebrating the homie DJ Chito’s birthday bash, along with super DJs Sabre, OMS, Pat Solo, and Senor Phate. Doors open at 10 p.m. and like always, no cover charge.

Caballeros doing what they do best
Sunday, Sept. 28 being the last day of the fair, you need to go and support the Fiesta Day Rodeo presented by Coors. Check out some of the caballeros doing what they do best on the most beautiful horses around. This event is located at the grandstand and is free with paid entrance to the fair. Showtime is 6 p.m.

Camino Real: ¡Esta muy bueno!
Now it’s been awhile since I’ve turned you on to some good comida, so I’m gonna tell you about this new spot called Camino Real restaurant, 3500 Truxtun Ave. I know you’ve seen the ad in MÁS.

Well, all I’m going to say is that this place is the Bomb, so if you haven’t been, try it! Order the “Real Chicken” — it’s so good you’ll be back, like me, lol. They’re open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The power of Pepe!

Pepe Aguilar made his way back to Bakersfield on Saturday, Aug. 30, where crowds of his biggest fan welcomed him with open arms.

This ranchera heartthrob of Mexican descent is the son of two other famed individuals — the legendary Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre.

As a teen, Pepe tried his musical luck with a short-lived rock band. But he later returned to his family’s ranchera roots and was put into his father’s concerts, eventually branching out on his own.

Pepe names The Who, Ignacio and Pink Floyd as some of his early musical influences, though the way he sings ranchera music does not seem to follow that list of other genre greats.

However, his success as a solo artist has been incredible. In 2002, Pepe became the first Mexican regional music singer to perform at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. He was also the first Hispanic to sing at LA’s Kodak Theater.

By all accounts, Pepe Aguilar will always be welcomed here in Kern County as well.

Q: Who has been your inspiration academically and why?
A: “My family has always been my inspiration when it comes to striving for excellence in my academics. I truly believe that it takes a strong support system like a great family to ensure someone’s success. My family supported every decision that I made before, during, and after college. Any success that I achieve now is because of that help and support.”

Q: What has been one of your most memorable college moments?
A: “For me, the most memorable moments of college were in my fourth year during my time abroad in Taiwan. One night while I was there, a group of Taiwanese students offered to take a fellow exchange student and me to watch the sunrise from one of Taiwan’s highest peaks. Since most Taiwanese college students ride motorcycles, they asked me to drive a rental car up to the top of the mountain. The journey was treacherous, to say the least. In some places, the road leading to the top was only wide enough for one car to pass. The top of the mountain and that morning’s sunrise was well worth the trip.”

Q: Why did you choose to major in architecture?
A: “For me, being an architect was the only career that I saw myself in since a young age. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be an architect.”

Q: Can you tell us about your architecture project?
A: “My senior project focused on the lost neighborhoods at Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles. The neighborhoods were demolished to make way for improved public housing during the late 1950s. The residents of Chavez Ravine were mostly working class Mexican-American immigrants, and were promised first choice of the new housing. After the housing projects fell through, the city decided to give the land to the Dodgers in order for Los Angeles to have a Major League Baseball team. The design for my project was a memorial museum that would house exhibits, a library, and assembly spaces that would educate the public about this important chapter in Southern California history.”

Q: What are your career plans and future goals?
A: “I have just started in a full time position at Perkins+Will in Los Angeles. My goal is to become a licensed architect and use all of the knowledge I have gained from my education to improve the built environment.”

The Mothership is now in full motion every third Friday of the month at a different location, inside The Element Lounge, 1927 K St., with not one but two rooms of nothing but the dopest jams you will never hear on the radio. Upstairs DJs for the night are DJs Wish, Odeed, Orange, Woody, and Philgood spinning drum & bass & more. DJs in the mixx downstairs are Soulcatcher, Chito, Sabre, & Pat Solo spinning hip-hop, funk, soul salsa house and world music. Doors open at 9 p.m., and like always, no cover charge.

Another Latin club night premieres Friday
Universal Ent. presents Super Caliente Latin Nights at The House, 3401 Chester Ave. at The Ice House. This spot is for the 21 & over with I.D. Cool drink specials all night, plus DJs mixing Latin, hip-hop, R&B & Top 40. Doors at 10 p.m. for the patio access and 11 p.m. for all access, strict dress code for men and ladies so look fly, lol. Hey what’s up, my loyal readers? Well, my New York City trip was awesome, my daughter and I had a blast and visited all the main spots — Brooklyn, SoHo, Little Italy, and my favorite of them all, Greenwich Village. We visited Times Square and got to see recording artist Rhianna on “The Today Show.”

We also got lost for a minute on the subway, but quickly found our way around, lol. But one might say it’s a little expensive — $5 ice cream cone, $13 Bud Light bottle, and a $60 dinner for the two of us. It was well worth it.

Tonight, and every Friday night, the Cabana Nightclub at 276 Union Ave. is in full swing with Latino Partyfiesta.

This Saturday, local radio station HOT 94.1 FM presents the “Old School Hip Hop Explosion” concert at the Rabobank Theater, 1001 Truxtun Ave., with back in the dayz recording artist set to hit the stage Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Naughty by Nature, Klymaxx, Coolio, Club Nouveau, Tone - Loc, Timex Social Club and Young MC. Pepe Aguilar, Ice Cube
Time for your heads up on upcoming concerts. Pepe Aguilar will be making a stop at the Rabobank Theater on Aug. 30. Pepe won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American/Tejano Music performance. He will be wooing the ladies with hit songs like “Por una Mujer Bonita” and “Historias de Mi Tierra.”

Also, West Coast rap artist Ice Cube will perform at the Bakersfield Fox Theater Aug. 27.

Lucky’s Pizza
OK, let’s do some comida. I know everyone loves pizza, right? But most pizza places close too early. Well, I recently found this new spot in the east side of town called Lucky’s Pizza at 6111 Niles St. and they stay open till 2 a.m. Yeah, 2 a.m., and they deliver, how cool is that? You might see a local band playing jams on the weekends.

So remember, if ever you want pizza before 2 a.m., call them and place your order at 366- LUCK. Tell them Noe G. told you about it!

Wine Fest 2008
This Saturday, the Kern County Museum Foundation is hosting this year’s Wine Fest 2008. Come and enjoy fine cuisine and lots of premium wines to taste, also a silent auction to end the evening.
