Noche de Cultura at Bakersfield College

Bakersfield College’s M.E.Ch.A club is inviting the public to celebrate a “Noche de Cultura.”

The second annual event will be held at 6 p.m. tonight at BC’s Indoor Theater .

Highlights of the event include mariachis, Peruvian and Mexican folklore, Aztec and belly dancers, as well as poetry, ceramics, traditional Mexican food and more.

“We have second-generation Mexicanos not knowing anything about their cultura and their background,” said M.E.Ch.A president Jesse Ibarra, “so, what we’ll do is give them a little bit of their culture.”

Ibarra added the event shows that “all those cultures have something in common with Chicano history.”

The event is funded by money raised by club members through car washes and other events.

Close to 200 people attended the event last year. And this year organizers expect about 300 people.

Funds raised in “Noche de Cultura” will be used to buy books for needy students and for scholarships, organizers said.

Cost to enter the event is $10 at the door.

For more information about Noche de Cultura, please call Jesse Ibarra at 565-0358.

Local group seeks volunteers for  ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ program

Volunteers are being sought to help make Christmas happier for elderly people who will spend the holiday alone or a struggling on a tight budget.

The local Home Instead Senior Care office and other local organizations and businesses are accepting volunteers for the Second annual Be a Santa to a Senior Program. The program collects gifts for the elderly, wraps them and delivers them throughout the holidays at different senior homes in the county.

Home Instead Senior Care provides non-medical home care and companionship for older adults.

The program runs from Nov. 1 through Dec. 15. The gifts are given to needy, orphaned and isolated seniors, previously identified by the local participating nonprofit organizations. The names and gift wish of these seniors hang on decorations on all Christmas trees placed at:

Wal-Mart, Castle & Cook, Avante Optical, Rabobank, Kern County Museum, Hall Ambulance Service, Westchester Funding, Holiday Inn Select, San Dimas Medical Group, Via Bella Salon, Macy’s Valley Plaza, Community Action Partnership of Kern’s administrative office, Head Start, Community Action Partnership Children’s Educational Services, Affordable Framing and Glenwood Gardens Skilled Nursing Facility.

The public is invited to pick a name and gift list from any tree, buy the gift listed and return it unwrapped to the store, along with the ornament attached. Home Instead Senior Care will then enlist volunteers and others to collect, wrap and distribute the gifts to these seniors.

A citywide gift-wrapping day will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Kern County Museum, and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Kern Senior  Collaborative.

“This program is a way that we can give back to our community by providing gifts and companionship to our area’s older adults who have contributed so much,” said Denise deCock, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Bakersfield.

“Our goal is to bring a little love and joy of the season into their lives.”
