Hello and welcome to your regular sneak peek into the pages of MAS magazine!

How sweet it is

They may sell slices of heaven in the form of savory sub sandwiches, whimsical-shaped cookies and melt-in-your-mouth cupcakes, but the mother-daughter duo of Maria Gueldner and Sheila Heninger aren’t all sugar and smiles. If there’s one thing this mother taught her daughter, it’s that you have to be tough to survive in the male-dominated business world.

Walk of art

There was a lot to see at the Arvin High School campus on Cinco de Mayo — a car show, food booths and more — but most eyes were downcast. That’s because, thanks to the school’s first Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest, the concrete had come alive with Aztec warriors, scenic vistas, flags and dancers. About a dozen students participated in the contest, which celebrated multiculturalism and artistic abilities by having students illustrate what Cinco de Mayo means to them.
