Two million lights formed into animated shapes, hot chocolate, family and friends.

What more do you need on a winter night?

How about a train ride?

“HolidayLights @ CALM,” the California Living Museum, offers this and much more.

The light show is back for its third appearance at the zoo, and new attractions include:

• The Candy Cane Express, a train that takes you through the zoo for only $1 per passenger,

• The Nutcracker Suite, a scene from the Nutcracker with animated characters from the 1980s Brocks department store.

Although the animals will not be available for viewing during the evening, there will be plenty of lights and other activities to entertain visitors, organizers said.

CALM was established 22 years ago to house injured animals native to California and botanical vegetation.

The parks foundation decided to have the light show fund-raiser three years ago after discovering that other zoos were doing the same.

The light show shines bright from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 16 to Dec. 23 and then again Dec. 26 to Dec. 30.

“You are not going to find another place with 2 million lights around here,” said Lana Fain, program supervisor. “I think a lot of people want to support CALM and that is why they attend, but this is a nice way to have  a nice family outing. The prices are reasonable and it makes for a good tradition.”

Admission prices are $4 for children 3-17; $6 for seniors ages 60 or older; and $8, general admission.

Last year, more than 30,000 people attended the light show. Those who attend this year will see lights animate scenes like:

• A volcano spewing multi-colored lava

• Frogs leaping across lily pads

• A sea serpent spewing flames from its nose

• A monkey throwing coconuts

• Santa riding around the world with his sleigh.

Teen Challenge will also be present selling apple dumplings, pizza, hot chocolate, hot cider, coffee, hamburgers and more.

Although the temperatures have been mild, Fain recommends families dress warmly.

Once you are done with the light show, you also receive a free pass to return to the park during the day and see the animals who call CALM home.

The parks normal daytime hours from now until March are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Admission prices are $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for children.

“We are also in need of volunteers to come and help out in the evenings,” Fain said. “Those who volunteer will receive a free pass to come back and enjoy the show.”
Those wanting to volunteer can reach Fain at 871-1822.
