Say “adios” to Mexicana Airlines in Bakersfield — at least until the economy sees an improvement, officials have said.

What was hailed as a welcomed addition to Kern County travelers, the direct flights from Bakersfield to Guadalajara via Mexicana are no more. However, passengers with flights originating from here can still travel to Mexico,  but from Los Angeles or Fresno.

In April, the airline suspended the flights for a one-month period, saying high fuel costs were to blame.

At the May 13 Kern County Board of Supervisors’ meeting, it was announced that now all Mexicana flights from Bakersfield are no more.

In contrast, when the international flights first began in March 2007, the newly added routes were well received by travelers.

“They’re extremely interested in traveling to Guadalajara,” said Delia Fuentes of Happy Tours travel agency in the March 23, 2007 edition of MÁS.

At that time, airport officials also agreed.

“After looking at the research and hearing customers’ demands, it made sense to have a direct flight ...” said Teresa Hitchcock, analysis and marketing manager for Kern County Airports.
