I am on dialysis. This is nothing new to me, since I've have been off and on dialysis since I was 12 yrs-old. I am now 49. In those 37 years, I have had 3 kidney transplants. I guess I could be considered some what of a specialist . There is something that I have noticed through the years; there are more alot of Hispanics on the machine. I lost my kidneys due to a birth defect. The men and women that I'm talking to are those between the ages of 30 to 45 yrs. of age. High blood pressure is one of the main reason for people ending up on dialysis. Diabetes is also one of the big culprits for total renal failure. In Bakersfield alone we have 4 dialysis centers, they run Monday through Saturday, some up to three shifts in a day. This doesn't include dialysis in the hospitals and home dialysis. You may have see the Get-A-Lift vans around Bakersfield, the majority of patients are dependent on these vans for their transportation. Most patient don't drive anymore.
There are many people who have been there for me throughout my life. I am one very blessed and loved individual. Still it hurts to see the fear in their eyes when they come to visit you in the hospital, not knowing if this will be the last time 'we' talk.
So please; watch your weight, the salt intake, and the stress level. Get your check-ups, especially if there is someone in your family history who has had diabetes. If you want to see your grandchildren grow up-take care of yourself. May God bless you.
