Summer is upon us, and so is the summer vacation season. If you are planning a family vacation this summer, there are certain things you should keep in mind to minimize the risk of becoming a victim of a crime. Having a fun and enjoyable trip for everyone is important, but it is just as important to take safety precautions while vacationing. Don’t let your vacation be ruined by a criminal. To help keep you and your family safe during your vacation, follow these simple tips, and your vacation is sure to be a success.

Before leaving home
1. Secure your home and property with good door and window locks.
2. Never hide a key outside, leave it with a trusted neighbor.
3. Have a neighbor pick up newspapers and mail.
4. Put light timers on several house lights. Program the timers to turn on lights at night.
5. Leave your plans and phone number with a neighbor or relative.

On the road
1. Carry traveler’s checks instead of large amounts of cash.
2. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t speak to strangers.
3. Don’t stop for stranded motorists. Call someone to help them.
4. If you suspect someone is following you, drive to the nearest business or law enforcement office. Do not pull over.
5. If your car breaks down, raise the hood and tie a white cloth to the antenna. Stay in the car. If you must leave the car, keep the entire family together.

Sightseeing
1. Ask your hotel for precise directions.
2. Ask if there are any areas of town to avoid.
3. Avoid appearing as if you are lost. If you do get lost go to a business and ask for directions.
4. Only carry the money you will need for that day.
5. Always lock your car, even if your stop is brief.
6. Pick a place to meet in case your family gets separated.
Hotel and motel security
1. Take the time to identify fire escapes, nearest elevators, etc.
2. Always secure your door when leaving or occupying the room.
3. Always positively identify anyone you let into the room.
4. Never leave valuables in the room, secure them in the hotel/motel safe.
5. Report any criminal activity to the business and local law enforcement agency.
