Clothes do make the man, whether you want to believe it or not.
And with fashion changing more often than the seasons, I thought I’d
share a few general fashion tips for men.
For one, looking good doesn’t take a lot of money. It does take time and dedication. And the first step begins with what is under the clothes.
I am not a big fan of mustaches, but if you are going to sport one then
you have to trim it before it begins to look like it came out of the
Mexican Revolution.
Trimming body hair is not a necessity, but just ask yourself what image you want to portray when you take off your shirt — metrosexual or bigfoot?
Clip both your finger nails and toenails. You might be saying, ‘Nobody ever looks at my feet.’ If nobody is looking at your feet, then you’re are not looking good enough for someone to want to look at them.
As far the hair on your head, anything goes. An easy way to decide what hair style to get is to ask your girlfriend.
Now let’s talk about clothes.
Shopping can be a chore but it pays in the end. Let’s start from the top of your head and end with your toes, which I hoped you clipped by now.
Baseball caps are good for baseball players, but for everyone else they say ‘Look at me. I am trying to hide something.’ Don’t wear them.
Just stop being lazy and comb your hair. No more bucket hats. Seriously, why do you want to wear something that makes you look like a combination of Gilligan and El Chavo del Ocho?
Sunglasses help protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays. You
don’t need to buy expensive sunglasses from one of the kiosks at the
mall. Just make sure they do the job and fit your face.
When it comes to shirts, there are so many choices. You can still wear long-sleeve shirts as long as you roll up the sleeves.
Most of us have been able to escape the Virgen de Guadalupe and national flag t-shirts. For those of you who have not, well, now is as good a time as any.
Polos, T-shirts and dress shirts come in more colors than white, black, grey, brown and blue. Don’t be afraid to go bright — everybody is doing it.
Maybe you want to go for yellow, orange or perhaps even pink. Light
colored shirts work well on those who have darker skin tones because
they provide great contrast.
OK, I admit that black goes with everything. I myself am a huge fan of black, but have you ever thought that yellow goes well with green and even pink and blue compliment each other? Try new color combinations.
You might just end up catching someone’s eye.
But make sure you get a shirt that is your size. One of the most puzzling things to me is most guys don’t know their shirt or pant sizes. All you have to do is fit into them. You don’t need a pair that has enough room to put another person inside.
Now let’s talk about pants. Yes, jeans are great, and if you get a good
pair, they can look hot, but be sure you also own a pair of slacks.
And during these hot summer days be sure and stock up on shorts. I know many of you are afraid of showing some leg, but in this case I have to vote for function over fashion. It gets way too hot in Bakersfield to
not be the proud owner of some shorts.
Finally, shoes. Please own a pair of dress shoes.
My friend recently reminded me that tennis shoes don’t go with
everything. Guess what? She is right.
A man should own at least one pair of dress shoes, one pair of running shoes, one pair of casual tennis shoes and a pair of flip flops — remember these are minimum requirements.
Once you have the basics for a good outfit, explore different
combinations. Don’t get caught up in wearing what the mannequin at the mall is wearing. That is just an example of what looks good.
If you are not sure of what goes well together, ask someone. Women are
great at shopping and providing good insights to what works for you and what doesn’t.
But you will find that if you work at it yourself, you will soon be able to develop your own fashion sense.
