Knitting is no longer just the pastime of
abuelas. According to the Craft Yarn Council of America, female knitters 25-34 are estimated at 5.7 million in the United States.
Rio de la Plata yarn is spun by a conglomerate of home-based spinners located in the city of Melo, Uruguay. Once spun, it is hand dyed in the city of Montevideo just half a mile east of the famous
Rio de la Plata. The company helps otherwise poverty-stricken employees by paying them a “living wage” for their beautiful yarns.
Magazines
Cost: Free and varies
Where to buy: On the Web and/or via telephone
It’s a true pleasure for a mujer to take a little time out for herself and enjoy a magazine ... but if there’s no magazine, no time out!
Of course, start out with getting your favorite chica signed-up to receive MÁS magazine, which will be delivered to her home — for free! Starting with our Jan. 5 issue, MÁS will no longer automatically show up on your front drive. But, don’t worry — if you take a moment to visit our Web site at: www.masmagazine and click the “about us” link, a few easy steps later, you can request that the publication for “culture, pride and community” be delivered straight to the mailbox of your choice (sign yourself up, too, while you’re at it!).
Or, call in your free subscription requests to 392-5777.
MÁS will also continue to be distributed at various rack locations throughout Bakersfield.
There are also various gift subscriptions available for most any women’s magazine, including Latina magazine — which is offering a holiday gift special of two subscriptions to Latina for $18; any additional gift subscriptions are another $8 each.
Visit www.latina.com and fill out the easy form. You’ll also receive free gift cards to inform your amigas about their new amiga — Latina magazine! — that will soon arrive from you with amor in the mail!
Really, just about any women’s magazine will make a nice holiday gift that will keep on giving all year long.
