Lucy Gallardo

Age: 54
Job title: Court services specialist
Family: Husband — Ronnie Gallardo; two sons — Brian and Brandon

Q: Between you and your sister, you have worked for Kern County for 70-plus years! How did you start?
A: I wanted to follow my “older” sister’s footsteps, so I started as a Typist Clerk I at KMC’s Collections Department. I graduated from Bakersfield High School in June 1972 and started with the county in November 1972.

Q: What do you love most about your job?
A:
Helping customers to facilitate their process by sharing my knowledge ... I try to put myself in their shoes.

Q: Why is community involvement important?
A: To reach out to the less fortunate and make a difference in their lives. Kern County has many homeless people and they need to be given a chance. I am a giver, not a receiver! The ability to give back is of great importance to me.

Q: Name a lasting moment that changed the course of your life.
A:
In 1973 my father was diagnosed with cancer and I realized then how short life can be. We should live every day as if it were our last. Make each moment count. Enjoy life to the fullest!

Q: Where do you want to be 10 years from now?
A: Retired, traveling with my husband, gambling with my parents and having grandbabies to love unconditionally as I did my sons. Also, volunteering for those that are less fortunate. By that time, I want to have checked half the things on my “bucket list.”

Maryann Martinez

Age: 55
Job Title: Family Support Officer
Family: Husband — Robert; two children — Jason and Andrea; and a grandson —Alijah

Q: What motivates you in life?
A: My family is my source of inspiration. The strength that I draw from my faith and family is the most important thing in my life. Gathering with my family creates memories that I will cherish forever.

Q: Why is community involvement important to you?
A: Knowing that you’re helping others and you put a smile on their face is rewarding. Giving words of wisdom. Maybe a hug. And just showing that you care.

Q: Between you and your sister, you have worked for Kern County for 70-plus years! How did you start?
A: When I first came in with the county I was right out of high school. I worked different positions for six years until I landed in the position I’m in right now.

Q: What do you love most about your job?
A: Helping people in their situations. Also, working with people you like makes my job easier. We are like family.

Q:
Name a lasting moment that changed the course of your life.
A: When my grandson came into our lives, he brought us so much love. My husband and I were there when he came into this world and it’s a moment we will never forget. What a beautiful addition he has been to our family.

Q: Where do you want to be in 10 years?
A: I want to be retired. I look forward to volunteering at the church and at my grandson’s school and vacationing with my husband.
