The Temptations are coming to town, hopefully bringing thier "Psychedelic Shack" and I "Ain't to Proud to Beg" for some tickets to their big event here in B-Town.
The Temptations came into the scene in the early to mid '60s. A lot of you were not even born yet. I was 14 years old when their music started hitting the airwaves and the Temptation craze started. I had all their albums. (What ever happened to them? Probably the same thing that happen to the 8-Tracks and record player) I don't know which of the Temptation songs are my favorite since they all were and still are ... I till remember the lyrics to some of them.
"Sunshine, blue skies, please go away, my love has found another and gone away, with her went my future, my life is filled with gloom, cause day after day, I stay locked up in my room, I WISH IT WOULD RAIN, rain, rain." AIN'T TO PROUD TO BEG was a heavy favorite.."and you know it, please don't leave me girl, please don't go." Those gloomy days were followed by bright days with......"I got sunshine, on a cloudy day, and when it's cold outside, I got the month of May. Well, I guess you see, what can make me feel this way, MY GIRL....My Girl."
What impressed me the most about them were the high tenors provided by Eddie Kendricks and Otis Williams, the baritone by Paul Williams and I loved the deep base by Melvin Franklin. They were a class act all by themselves, of course with the help of Motown and Barry Gordy.
But their songs like “Cloud Nine,” “Runaway Child, Running Wild,” “I Can’t Get Next to You,” “Psychedelic Shack,” “Ball of Confusion” and if I had to select a favorite among all my favorites, it would have to be “Just My Imagination”.
How would I rate The Temptations among other musical groups of that time? Well, I would say they were just as great if not greater than The Supremes and The Beatles. Not to take anything away from all the other musical groups in that era because that was during the explosion period of Motown.
As far as my dancing goes, those were the days and I hope I don't embarrass anyone as we're getting down on "Ain't too proud to bed".....Yeah!! You know it and it's not "Just My Imagination".
