My name is Jesse Quintanilla, and I currently work at CSUB with the Educational Talent Search Program. The CSUB ETS program reaches out to low-income and first generation junior high/high school students to ultimately assist them with their transition from high school to post-secondary education. We help the students with their admissions and financial aid applications – including with their enrollment into all types of institutions.  I am a family man and a person who simply likes to serve others rather than receiving – helping students succeed in life is my passion.  Enough about me – let me introduce la familia Quintanilla.....................................................................

My story:

I am originally from Guanajuato Mexico and my parents migrated to the states in 1978.  My story is the typical immigrant story, similar to others who also come to the states to find the American Dream.  I came from humble beginnings, and at first it was difficult to assimilate to the American culture - mainly trying to learn the language and becoming familiar to the different customs in the U.S compared to Mexico. Yes mi familia struggled economically and suffered social deprivation (working in the fields, low paying jobs, limited basic needs etc) in the states like many others that come seeking upward mobility and simply a better way of life.

During my junior year in 1985, I met my high school sweetheart - Cynthia Davis: )  Cynthia has been the love of my life for 20 years and the marriage is better than ever.  We have a son in Elementary School and a beautiful daughter that just graduated from Golden Valley High School. My wife and I are extremely proud of my daughter’s leadership qualities and academic accomplishments; she recently was accepted to UCLA and will be pursuing a degree in Communications and Journalism.   Check out her bio in the  MAS magazine:  Issue 38

I am the most blessed person in the world because God has given me a loving and supportive wife. It was because of her that I began to think about my future educational goals which lead me to believe that I had the academic potential to pursue higher education. I was the first one in my family to obtain a Baccalaureate in Sociology and Master's Degree in Education.  My blessings and accomplishments have been obtained because God gives me daily strength, peace, and happiness. God has given me the most beautiful kids in the world, and a supportive and loving wife who has shown nothing but love and dedication towards our marriage. We are not the perfect family by no means, but as long as we remain close to God and come to him daily asking for forgiveness – I believe that is the glue that will keep my family and my wife and I united forever. Remember to put God first in your lives, trust in him, give him praise on a daily basis and instead of looking for the American dream - the American dream will come to you.
